If your hair is thick and dry, you want a shampoo that will moisturize it, not strip out all the oils (which come from your scalp, and are meant to protect your hair...unless your scalp produces excessive amounts, in which case you would want one that removes some of the oil).
I have had good results in the past with Sunsilk, Garnier Fructis, Herbal Essence, and Suave. Suave has the best price at $1.92 for a bottle of shampoo and conditioner, each ($3.94 total), so it is fairly inexpensive to try a few.
